"Condoms are now about as scarce in Uganda as weapons of mass destruction in Iraq"

Fidelite,

et Protection!

We know some friends think we are taking our conspiracy theory too far when we suggest that the AIDS virus was a CIA driven biological weapon that went wrong in the testing stage (in Africa) and then got out of control. But we are not exaggerating when we point out that the US government is deliberately making the situation worse by:

  1. Refusing to use their legislative power to compel pharmaceutical firms to provide low cost antiviral treatment drugs and patents to HIV/AIDs affected countries

  2. Undermining HIV/AIDs prevention programs in sub-Saharan Africa and Central America by cutting funding for condoms (in the name of abstinence)

We know that prostitution helps the spread of HIV/AIDS. The US insists that prostitution must be condemned and refuses funding to any government which condones it. Brazil in turn has refused to accept US$40 million, rather than stigmatise prostitutes - who are essential to anti-AIDS strategy. Go, Brazil! you may still have many equality problems there, but you are big enough to SAY NO to the US. We like that. Most prostitutes don't have that luxury.

Progress in development continues to be reversed by the increase of HIV/AIDS. It lays waste the population. It takes up time in caring. It stops children going to school. Cohort after cohort of young professionals - having managed to train and qualify, get some experience - are lost. Few will talk about it by name, they say it was cancer that killed off their family member.

Men could stop the spread by being faithful to their wives, by being responsible, using condoms. Let's see now, what drives prostitution...? Shouldn't it be the men who are stigmatised?
